Habitat for Humanity International was founded in 1976 in Georgia, USA. Habitat for Humanity Canada was founded in 1985, and our Prince Edward-Hastings Habitat for Humanity affiliate was formed in 1994 and began operations in 1995. In 2020 we will be celebrating our Silver Anniversary – 25 years of helping families in Hastings and Prince Edward Counties.
Our organization’s goal is to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness throughout the world. We believe everyone deserves a safe and decent place to live, and every day we take action to help achieve that goal.
Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward Hastings brings communities together to help support other community members achieve their goals of home ownership, or to help them move out of poverty housing and into new residences that are safe, decent, and affordable.
The Prince Edward-Hastings Habitat for Humanity affiliate has already built 24 homes, helping 26 families in our region – but there is much more to do, and much more we can accomplish together, to help solve the current housing crisis in our communities.
Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward Hastings is a registered charity. We are a social services agency, a mortgage lender, a homebuilder, and a retailer thorough our ReStore location in Belleville, which covers our administrative costs so that all other fundraising efforts can be devoted to helping build and create more decent and safe housing for the communities we serve.
We encourage volunteerism, and all families we assist must contribute volunteer hours in some capacity, with families who wish to become homeowners committing to providing over 500 hours of volunteer community service with our organization, in our ReStore operation, at our build sites, or in our communities.
Internationally, Habitat has built more than 500,000 homes in over 80 countries around the world since 1976.
Our Vision: A world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.
Our Mission: To mobilize volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting home ownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty.
We Believe in Housing for All: We believe that access to safe, decent and affordable housing is a basic human right that should be available to everyone, regardless of their socio-economic standing in our society.
We Believe Everyone Has Value: We believe in the worth and dignity of every human being. We respect the people we serve, alongside those that help us through financial or volunteer contributions, with everone contributing to our efforts. People are our greatest resource, and we believe that we are all stronger if we work together.
We Believe in Partnership: We believe we can best achieve our mission through meaningful and mutually beneficial partnerships with others, no matter how big or how small.
We Believe in Diversity and Inclusiveness: We believe there is a role for everyone who wants to help us achieve our mission and vision, regardless of their beliefs, faith, religion, race, creed, colour, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, or economic status. We are not only stronger together, but also further enriched, enlightened, and educated through our diversity.
We Beleive Faith is Expressed Through Action: We acknowledge and respect our Christian foundation, and the heritage of our organization, while working to serve and work with people of all faiths and beliefs, in the truest spirit of justice and compassion, without judgement, and with love for all.
