BELLEVILLE – Habitat for Humanity has once again helped a local family’s dream come true.

Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward-Hastings has just completed the construction of two homes on Donald Street in Belleville as part of the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Building Project.

To celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday, Habitat Canada committed to building 150 homes, two of which are in Belleville.

Partnering with Habitat for Humanity this year, was the local arm of the Lions Club. For the first time in its history, the Lions donated $100,000, which covered the entire cost of building the house.

Larry Brown, president of the Belleville Lions Club, said the members wanted to do something special to celebrate the club’s 100th birthday.

“I thought it would be exciting to just donate the money,” said Brown. “It was nothing compared to taking part in building the house.”

Brown added that he couldn’t be any prouder of the club members if he tried.

The Bell family, which includes Sabrina, her husband Delano and their five children, had to put in a total of 500 hours of sweat equity to get the house.

Sabrina Bell added that working full-time made that difficult, but somehow, she still managed to find the time.

“We’re incredibly excited to be in our new home,” she said. “We can’t wait to create memories with our kids in the future.

Bell added that it’s been quite a journey from where they were to where they are now, and despite working long hours, she said that it was worth putting in the hours knowing that they’ll have a forever home at the end.

“It really helps to motivate you,” said Bell. “It’s been such an unforgettable journey and we’re so grateful to everyone who has helped with the project.”

Delano Bell ended his speech with a poem, saying his family wouldn’t be where they are if it weren’t for the help of Habitat for Humanity, the Lions Club and all of the volunteers.

He added that his kids were excited to have their own rooms and a house they can be proud to bring friends to.
