Habitat PEH, Loyalist sign partnership Maureen Piercy, President of Loyalist College in Belleville, Ont. and Bob Clute, Chairman of Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward-Hastings sign a new-build partnership for the construction of a new Trenton home by Construction Renovation Technician students at Loyalist, Thursday, Sept. 11, 2014.
Habitat for Humanity and Loyalist College are about to build what they hope could become a long-term partnership for families in need and students. Bob Clute, Chairman of Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward-Hastings, and Maureen Piercy, President of Loyalist College, made it official Thursday when the pair signed a new building agreement that will involve Construction Renovation Technician students in a home construction project on Sidney Street in Trenton.
“It’s absolutely vital that our kids, many of them are adults, get involved,” said Clute. “We build homes for people who’ve never believed they could afford a single-family home. We don’t build them for adults, we look for the children. There has to be children in the family. We give them hope.”
The local chapter of Habitat for Humanity was formed in 1994 and built its first home four years later. The not-for-profit organization dedicated to the elimination of poverty housing has, along with community partners, built up to 15 homes since 1998.
Clute handed out the keys of the latest build to Connie Matthews, a single mother of two, at 7 York St. in Picton on Aug. 29. The building process for the new build is already underway, said Tom Falcao, Co-ordinator of the Construction Renovation Techniques program at Loyalist. The home builders of tomorrow at Loyalist College are expected to start erecting the new Trenton home sometime next week or the following week.
“We’ve started the building process already by applying for the building permit,” said Falcao. Len Kennedy, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward-Hastings, said the family who will be presented with the new home will be introduced to the public in about two to three weeks.
