Working Together: The Importance of Trust and Alignment

From the Desk of Hazzem Koudsi, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward-Hastings.

We have a new national CEO for Habitat Canada! I had the absolute pleasure of interacting with and hearing our new CEO, Pedro Barata, speak at our recent national leadership conference. This conference is an opportunity for CEOs from 45 Habitat affiliates across Canada to come together, focus on our direction, and ensure alignment with the national strategic direction in an environment of trust.

In a large, decentralized organization like Habitat for Humanity, trust and alignment are critical to success. Trust fosters transparency, facilitating more productive collaboration and empowering creativity across diverse teams and geographies. When leadership inspires mutual two-way trust, we all feel more confident in our work, with greater accountability and ownership of results.

No two Habitat affiliates are alike, which is challenging to navigate at the national level. Alignment ensures that all affiliates, despite our independence, work toward shared goals. In decentralized systems, decision-making is often distributed, making it vital for teams to clearly understand the organization’s vision, mission, and strategic priorities. Strong alignment reduces redundancy, confusion, and misaligned efforts, ensuring effective resource utilization. This minimizes partisan politics and maximizes our agility, capitalizing on the diversity within the Habitat federation.

The symbiotic relationship between trust and alignment is critical. Trust enables teams to align without constant oversight, relying on shared values and mutual understanding. Conversely, alignment reinforces trust by having everyone work towards well-understood strategic objectives. Without trust, our decentralized structure risks fragmentation, with affiliates prioritizing their own agendas over established agreements and strategic direction, which has proven catastrophic for some former affiliates.

Pedro understands this critical intertwining as foundational to well-functioning organizations, which pretty much guarantees success. Other supporting elements like financial sustainability and innovative processes are natural by-products of solid trust and alignment. I know we are on the right path to increased success, with the dream of homeownership becoming a reality, thanks to these stable foundational elements being reinforced by our new national CEO, Pedro Barata.
