Earth Day – Our way to hug Mother Earth

From the Desk of Hazzem Koudsi, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward-Hastings.

April is a month that symbolizes renewal, growth, and awareness. As I write this, I see wet snow and cold winds blowing but, winter will eventually fade and allow sunny spring days to take center stage. April brings with it a sense of optimism and fresh beginnings. The earth begins to bloom—trees regain their leaves, flowers burst into colour, and animals (and some humans) emerge from hibernation. This natural rebirth reminds us of our connection to the environment and the vital role we play in preserving it. In many ways, April serves as a metaphor for new growth, not just in nature, but in our own habits and attitudes toward sustainability.

One of the most noteworthy events in April is Earth Day, celebrated on April 22nd. Earth Day is more than just a calendar date—it is a global call to action, encouraging individuals and communities to take responsibility for their impact on the planet. Earth Day has become an annual reminder that the health of our environment is directly tied to the choices we make every day. It urges us to adopt sustainable practices, reduce waste, and support policies that protect our planet for future generations.

April’s symbolism of new growth aligns perfectly with the goals of Earth Day. Just as nature begins anew each spring, Earth Day reminds us to renew our vow to be more conscious about sustainability. It’s a time to reflect on our consumption habits, energy use, and carbon footprint. Small steps—like recycling, reducing plastic use, conserving water, and choosing renewable energy sources—can have a profound collective impact. These actions help preserve the planet’s resources and reduce pollution, creating healthier, more balanced ecosystems.

Recycling, in particular, plays a crucial role in the pursuit of sustainability. Habitat for Humanity ReStore has just the remedy that will help preserve Mother Earth. Our ReStore offers everyone a chance to bring in their unused or left over construction material for others to consume. This reduces the strain on landfills and limits the extraction of raw resources from the finite resources Mother Earth has to offer. In 2024 alone, our Belleville and Trenton ReStores diverted 670 tons (or 670,000kg) of material away from landfills and instead became materials that were repurposed for builds or other needs.  April is a perfect month to reevaluate our recycling practices—ensuring we sort materials correctly, support community recycling programs, and look for opportunities to upcycle or donate items to the ReStore instead of throwing them away. And best of all, your donated items come with a charitable tax receipt and the satisfaction knowing that you are giving someone else a chance to upcycle and be happy.

Beyond recycling, April inspires us to make more sustainable lifestyle choices. Supporting local farmers, using eco-friendly products, walking or biking instead of driving, and planting trees or gardens are all meaningful ways to contribute to a greener world. These choices not only benefit the planet but also promote physical and mental well-being, reinforcing the idea that environmental health and personal health are deeply connected.

Join us in celebrating Earth Day and committing to more sustainable living, in turn giving a hug to Mother Earth! Our gate is open everyday until 4:30pm to accept your donations, so we encourage you to stop by – and as a bonus, you will feel satisfied with a charitable tax receipt. A small action that can create a large impact to support the preservation of Mother Earth for your family and many generations to come.
