Lions Club donates $100K to Habitat For Humanity

The Lions Club of Belleville made a $100,000 donation to Habitat For Humanity Thursday.

One milestone deserves another and the Lions Club of Belleville is celebrating a major anniversary by helping the Quinte community.

The local club is celebrating its 64 years in Belleville and the service club’s 100th anniversary worldwide. In honour of the anniversary, the Lions Club is embracing a number of exciting millennial projects. They have chosen to partner with Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward – Hastings by funding the building of a home to the tune of $100,000 for a local family on Donald Street in Belleville.

“There is nothing more rewarding in life than seeing the results of helping another person, especially a child,” stated Larry Brown, president of the Belleville Lions Club. “We approached Habitat for Humanity as we decided what better way to celebrate our 100 year anniversary than to build a local family a home. This will be a great legacy to the Belleville Lions Club and to Lions around the world. I couldn’t be more proud.”

Habitat for Humanity is celebrating Canada’s 150th with the Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter Work Project. Habitat will build 150 homes across Canada, with two being built in Belleville.

“This goes much further than a donation to build a house,” stated Bob Clute, executive director of Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward–Hastings. “The Lions have committed to completely changing the lives of a local family and their children through affordable shelter. Financial stability allows parents to invest in their children’s future. A room of their own means the children have their own space to study. Most importantly, the Lions are going to be providing a new family with a safe and stable place to call ‘home’.”

For more than 36 years, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalyn have travelled the world with Habitat for Humanity. They work shoulder to shoulder with thousands of volunteers and the Habitat families with sweat on their brows, hope in their eyes and gratitude in their souls. They have accepted the challenge of changing lives, one family at a time. Past President Carter is a former president of the Lions Club in Plains, Georgia and a district governor.

The Lions Club of Belleville have also accepted the challenge of forever changing the life of a local family.
